Resin vs. Plastic: What’s the Difference
Resin and plastic are often used for similar purposes. It’s no wonder why so many people get them confused. However, they are different materials, and as such, they have different capabilities.
The main difference between resin and plastic is the source—resin is from plants while plastic is from various sources, including gas, oil, vegetable fats, and more.
What is resin?
Resins are solid or semi-solid amorphous compounds derived from plants. They are highly viscous, meaning they are thick and sticky with a consistency somewhere between a solid and a liquid. While they can be converted into polymers, they are also used for many plant-based substances. You can find resin in a wide variety of products, including food containers, jewelry, perfume, and inks. In fact, you can even find resin in mummies.
What is plastic?
Plastic, on the other hand, is not found in a pure form like resin. It is made up of several different substances and materials. It can be derived from petrochemicals such as gas or oil, or from plant-based substances such as vegetable oil. Plastic is also made up of polymers, making them extremely versatile. Depending on the type of polymers it is comprised of plastic can be rigid or flexible, durable or brittle. It is why so many products are made from plastic, including electrical equipment, bags, stethoscopes, and more.

Many folks purchase a plexiglass or tempered piece of glass (use clear rubber feet) for a more substantial surface and protection from surface damage. Depending on how you use your table will dictate how you choose to protect its surface.
Using a vehicle plastic POLISH (be sure it is a polish and not a polishing compound) can rejuvenate the surface. We use products such as Meguiar’s Clear Plastic Polish. Apply with a soft microfiber or cotton cloth after washing surface with water and mild soap.
Handmade items will always have small imperfections which are normal. We strive to craft the best products possible and hope you enjoy them for years to come.
